How Can Clergy Address the Legacy of the Troubles?

I'm speaking at this "How Can Clergy Address the Legacy of the Troubles? Conference", Wednesday 26th February 2014 in Brackaville Parish Hall, Coalisland. My topic is "The legacy of ‘The Troubles?". The question is what angle to take? So may different ways to think about this question: youth, sectarianism, invisible legacies, mental health, victims, legacies of violence, economic impact, embedded systems of practice (like segregated education), and of course "whatever you say nothing"....

Religion and Reconciliation in South Africa

New Book

Religion and Reconciliation in South Africa: Voices of Religious Leaders Edited by Audrey R. Chapman and Bernard Spong

Postapartheid South Africa's efforts to come to terms with its past, particularly its Truth and Reconciliation Commission's emphasis on forgiveness and reconciliation, is of special interest to many in the world community. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), led by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, was mandated to go beyond truth-finding and to "promote national unity and reconciliation in a spirit of understanding which transcends the conflict and divisions of the past." In contrast with other truth commissions, the TRC was led by clerics rather than lawyers and judge, and the TRC's approach to reconciliation was shaped by and imbued with religious content. The TRC submitted its final report to the Mandela administration in October 1998.
Over the next two years, the Rev. Bernard Spong, former communications director of the South African Council of Churches, conducted a series of in-depth interviews about the TRC with thirty-three key religious figures.

God is a fish

Thought I would post the first few lines of the article you just recommended as it may get some people to read it, as it is by far one of the strangest I have ever read. Could it be true? An attempt to slander a sect of people? A happy coincidence, or miracle? Or simply a talking carp? Then again, if asked if I would put my faith in George Bush or a talking fish...I think the answer is pretty obvious really....

"An obscure Jewish sect in New York has been gripped in awe by what it believes to be a mystical visitation by a 20lb carp that was heard shouting in Hebrew, in what many Jews worldwide are hailing as a modern miracle. Many of the 7,000-member Skver sect of Hasidim in New Square, 30 miles north of Manhattan, believe God has revealed himself in fish form." For more click here.
